Appointments files, 1845-1847.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the appointing of individuals to various state and local offices and the signing of grants and commissions. This series consists of letters and petitions relating to appointments, resignations, commissions, and contested elections. Among the appointments referred to in the records are a request for the appointment of superintendent for the Cahawba Navigation Company; recommendations for individuals to serve as director of the state bank in Mobile, and the appointment of a Commissioner of Deeds for Alabama in South Carolina, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and the District of Columbia. The series also contains several letters regarding the contested election of the clerk of county court in Mobile. Recommendations by Governor Arthur P. Bagby are also present.
